The Historic Fort Steilacoom Association began in 1983, when local volunteers raised funds and donated generously of their time and skills to renovate and restore the original officer’s homes that had been left in disrepair.
In 49 other states, ‘first forts’ like this one are administered by cultural, educational, recreational or historical agencies of government. Washington decided to leave Puget Sound’s first fort in the hands of volunteers who pay for its care.
The purpose of HFSA is to restore and preserve historic Fort Steilacoom: To perpetuate the significance of the site for the benefit of the public by operating a museum complex and a strong educational program stressing the role of the Fort in Northwest history.
HFSA is a non-profit 501c3 organization run by volunteers whose Board of Directors meet each month to determine the direction of the museum interpretation. Volunteers host various work parties, living history demonstrations, and guided tours of the fort buildings. They also produce a scholarly journal three times a year with original content about local history. While operating the museum, HFSA also operates a gift store that is open to the public .
Over the years, the museum has continued to grow and develop thanks to the generous support of donors like you. Joining the association or making a donation goes a long way towards raising funds used to leverage capital grants to successfully do the job of preserving a historic site. Your support, at every level, is greatly appreciated.
The association’s support community reaches back to 1983, when local volunteers raised funds and donated generously of their time and skills to renovate and restore the original officer’s homes that had been left in disrepair. Over the years, historians have researched the history of Fort Steilacoom to provide an accurate account of life at the military post during its period of significance. Volunteers and members of the Association’s Board of Directors have developed a research library, so further research may benefit the public at large and students of military history. There is always more work to do and the following programs also support our mission:
The association also benefits from several community partnerships. The following organizations have generously supported the Historic Fort Steilacoom over the years:
